Met a bunch of great guys while there, seabees from Tien Sha, marines from our own sesurity detactment and others that were just passing thru on the way to Dong Ha,Hue and other points north. Most memorable event of that year was the evacuation of Kham Duc the day it was overrun, it was the most rewarding days work of my 20 year military career.

Comments: Hello my friend Bob!

On this Veterans Day...November 11th, 1999

Dear Veterans,

Thanks for your military service to our country.

I am not a veteran. I grew up during the Vietnam period.

As a senior in high school in 1969 and class president, our student government sent "shoeboxes" of goodies to soldiers fighting in Vietnam.
I recall thinking that on the TV the Vietnam would never end.
It made me sick to my stomach to see the list of casualties that were scrolled on the news screen each evening.
I just couldn't comprehend how so many young people,
close to my age,
were being killed and why it continued.
I never thought it would end.
I was on the other side of the world watching like it was a "BAD DREAM."
I was acutely aware of the protesting and horrible way some people were showing disgust
with the American soldiers when they came home from Vietnam.
I knew of people who opted for Canada.
I prayed for loved ones serving at that time in Vietnam.

I was just a teenage girl who was affected vicariously by this Vietnam.
I was so ashamed and embarrassed by the treatment I saw of Vietnam veterans.
I think this unwarranted ill treatment of veterans was so wrong.
It hurt my heart.
As I grew older and became a teacher,
I found out that children did not know the meaning of the word "Veteran"
or why we have holidays to honor all veterans.
That made me cry
. I was so ashamed and embarrassed again.

This time, I felt like I could do something to rectify that ignorance.
Thus was born the Veterans for a Change - teaching children the meaning of the word "Veteran".
I strongly believe that children must be taught the sacrifices of great men and women who served this nation.
No better way than to have the veterans come to class and teach the children.
I also believe that children should learn "service to others"

and that is done by collecting "change" during each month of October (for past 7 years)
and then donating all that change to local veterans
to help brighten the days of veterans in Illinois V. A. Hospitals...specifically Danville and Quincy.
In 7 years, this "CHANGE" has added up to over $12,500.00 and all of it
has been donated to veterans.
It pales in comparison to the wonderful rapport and lessons that the veterans have taught us all.
This money is used by our local veterans to buy the veterans
in V.A. Hospitals, "self care items"…this includes socks, shaving materials
and various other personal items not provided by the hospital.

I felt helpless watching Vietnam as a young girl.
I lost friends there
. I also lost an uncle in WWII.
Life is so precious. Freedom is not free.
Never in my life did I ever think that Vietnam veterans were properly thanked.

This little Veterans for a Change project at the K-8 school
just makes the children aware of what veterans and their families endured
. All veterans. All conflicts. We have been so blessed to get to know these veterans.
We have been talking about and honoring fallen soldiers that we will never get the honor to meet here on Earth.
I am hopeful that these lessons will give our young people an eye into the making of our precious freedoms.

To all veterans, I say thank-you.

Even in my ignorance, I have always appreciated you.

I receive hundreds of emails from veterans via my Veterans for a Change website.

Military men and women, we are proud of you.
May angels always sleep on your pillows!

Thank-you Veterans, Laura Lincoln, Illinois laura@abelink.com

Yesterday at work a co-worker of mine stated that he did not believe in celebrating the 4th of July. After hearing this I became instantly angry. I often think of what people have went through and questioned how horrible it would be to have been in hell-like situations. I guess I am just typing this so that someone can know that I don't feel the same as at least one person that I work with.

Comments: Great Site! Those who don't understand say we are to "Put it behind us", or "Forget about it, it's over. It's been 30 years". BS!!! What they don't understand is that no matter where we came from, what our background was, what color our skin is; the experiences from that "year" or "years" in country have changed us forever, have made us what we are today; for the better or the worse! For myself, I never want to forget. I want always to remember the names and faces of those that I lay face down with during a mortar attack, hoping it will quit soon. Those that I shared a poncho liner with during the monsoons to keep from freezing our asses off. Those that I got so fu_____ drunk with that we couldn't walk or crawl back to the hooch. Those that shared stories of family, hometown, girlfriends and wives. I never want to forget. Those of you who know, know exactly what I mean. Those men; although most of us were no more that boys; were closer than any brother could ever be (my opinion). I will always remember those who came home and those who were brought home. The 60's were a wonderful year, many interesting things happened, what a shame they were wasted becasue of that ridiculous war. I am 14 years old, and I am doing a research project on the 60's and the Vietnam War, and I am proud to say that my teacher, Douglas O'brien, is a Vietnam War veteran.

Every where I go, I wear my VietNam Veteran and Proud of it hat. I travel a lot with the Army Corps of Engineers, and have had the distinct pleasure to talk and relive old times with other Viet Vets I meet. Keep up the good work on this web page. He was a CE who has his special warfare pin and he once said he worked with UDT. He struggled with severe PTSD over the last 10 years. He was beginning to break down and talk about things. He had just admitted to being a POW in Cambodia. The stress of PTSD did not help with the odds of a heart attack. I don't know what is worse. I know that I miss my Dad, who I also called my "Chief". To those who truly know what "hell on earth" is, I still pray for you that you may once again experience a peaceful night's rest.

I graduated high school in 1990 and our American history classes are very thourough right up until the early 1960's and then there isn't a damn thing. There is a terrible injustice being done to our Vietnam veterans by not telling the truth about the Vietnam war. I want to here the real deal, not the crap the government pushes on us and expects us to believe, but the real story from the guys who were there and fought the NVA and our true relationship with the South Vietnamese Army. Please e-mail me with any and all info. Thank you to all Vietnam veterans for your bravery and dedication and let's never forget the guys we left behind. WE BUILD!WE FIGHT! CAN DO!

I feel very strongly about this war. And since we are currently discussing the Vietnam War in my composition class your site has been very helpful. A man came to speak here at our school, and said that if you ever meet a vet welcome him home. So to all of you Vietnam Veterans out there WELCOME HOME! Despite what many think I am thankful for those of you who fought and proud of you. Though I feel that the war was wrong I feel even more strongly for the men who fought and gave there lives. I may only be 18 and lived the war vicariously through my father, but know I am proud of all of you. WELCOME HOME!

I met some of the most loving people in my life. I have a great respect for all those who have served our country. I often visit the New Jersey Vietnam Veteran's Memorial off the Garden State Parkway. Recently, they added a museum to the memorial and I was very impressed with it. Despite the fact that the museum had only one room, I spent hours reading and learning about the war. The museum is very informative and insightful. I have also been reading up on many of the Vietnam books in the public library at home. I am interested in becoming a psychologist and helping victims of trauma recover, especially war victims. I feel the need to care for them and I have a place deep within my heart for the veterans of war, in particular the Vietnam Veterans! I thank them for all that they did and I ask that God may bless every single one of them!

My dad was in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne in Hue from November 1967 to December 1968, and, as a new member of the armed forces at the United States Air Force Academy, seeing our POWs come back is very important to me because one day I, too, could become captive. I wholeheartedly believe that there are still men alive in Vietnam and I would not hesitate to go and bring them back.

Comments: Thank you to all of our Viet Nam veterans. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. I love you all!! I was very young when you all returned home and did not understand why we weren't celebrating the return of our heroes. I was proud of all of you! My Daddy served in Viet Nam, my oldest brother and many of my "adopted brothers". I cry everytime I see pictures of "The Wall" in DC and think of all the fine young men and women I knew and loved as a child who served and many who died there. I am now married to a Viet Nam veteran and he still finds it very hard to talk about the war and his two tours there. I would love to hear from some of the veterans and perhaps, God willing, reunite with some of my "brothers". My address is: 2075 Park Rd Ridgeway, SC 29130. Thank you all and God Bless each of you. I love you!! PS If you served with a SGT Walter J Smith 101st Airborne (mid 60's?) he is my husband.

Comments: I would like to salute all of you brave men who risked your lives for the name of our country. I am a 27 year old son of a navy vet, whom served all around the world, fighting for freedom and for all causes which lead to the independence which we all share today. My grandfather, died last year of cancer,he served in WWII paving the way for the amount of freedom which I hold in my hands today. My objective in writing this letter is to let all of you vetsknow that even though I wasn't alive during the time in which you suffered most,it does not go unrecognized by me and my family.I believe that the youth of our nation are very selfish and have no awareness of the lives spent and the heartache felt in order to have the ability to walk outside without fear,to say and do what they want.I was given the choice( by my father) after high school to either go to college or to enter the military.I wanted to give my country all that I have by entering into a BUDS unit, training and personal discipline are my strongest assets. My father sat me down one day and told me a story about a close friend of his, that he lost in war. He told me of the pain and dismay that this soldier's wife, father, mother, brother and him as a close friend had to go through. He said that he would not have wished that feeling on his worst enemy,or more so, especially on himself. So he talked me into going to college, playing football and obtaining a degree in film.I never knew anything about the canine units,or their special uses during the war, saving lives, creating that other element that the enemy had to worry about.I would love nothing more than to help all of you men obtain worldly recognition for yourselves as well as for your best friends.(the canines) To you, sir,he whom receives this letter.I solely request permission to stand up and salute all of you men and your canine soldiers for your bravery, dedication, and heart.I might live in a modern day world, but I am truly a soldier at heart.God bless everyone who sees this letter and thank you for the freedom. Sincerely, Armando Biondo

Comments: My father is a Vietnam veteran. A very proud Marine, he served 14 months in Vietman. He very seldom talks about being there, but I know that he was proud to serve. I thank God everyday that he was one of the lucky ones to come home safe and without ill-effects. I, like many teenagers during the war, wore a POW bracelet. I've often wondered if Capt. Ronald Mastin ever came home. I was searching in the Congress Library and happily discovered that he, indeed, came home. I pray that he and his family are happy and well. If by chance he reads this message, I just wanted him to know that I prayed for his safe return while I wore his bracelet and that I still have the bracelet to this day. If I some how could contact him, I would like to send the bracelet to him. If there's any way to get this message to him, I would greatly appreciate it. I believe he was in the Air Force, although I'm not positive. Thank you for a great page. Kim Tolentino

When the Viet Nam War ended my brother was only 17 and still in high school, but wanted to sign up. He was unable to due to an auto injury. He wanted to fight and serve this country. He is now doing so as a police sergent here in Illinois. He is fighting the war of injustice being brought on by our own people. I am proud of him and I pray for him as I do for all those lost in one way or another in our Wars for the betterment of our land. God Bless Our Native Land, Firm May She Ever Stand!

Comments: WELCOME HOME BROTHERS!!!!! When they are all home, only then shall we leave it alone. POWMIA You are not forgotten. I wasn't there, but I still care. I LOVE my Vietnam Vets. Why do I cling to & always "HUG" the VNV M/C? Because you earned & deserve to be given the greatest of Love, Respect, Rememberance, & Thanks. VNV M/C has taught me. Brotherhood-- all united as one. When they are all gone, who will remember besides me? Brothers Too, I hope to see, carrying on for the VNV. Teach our children and let them be, Brothers Too, to honor the VNV. United as one to always stand and be, TRUE BROTHERHOOD, Togetherness as it should be. Thank you for teaching and sharing with me. With Love & Respect, Always Remembered & Now Thanked, To Any & All of MY VNV. Baby sis, Hugger <2/99> ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- THANK YOU POWMIA You are not forgotten. As long as I live and my descendents breath, Always remembered will be all VNV. To Love & Respect & Honor you see, & heard by the world as your soul cries & screams, I pray we can cure PTSD. One day we will when the world hears & sees, the screams, oh so silent, From our Brothers, the pow/mia's, & all VNV's I wasnt there, but please know I'll always care. Our country said, There's a fight that we see, They're fighting for things in which we believe. The things we take for granted, the things our forefathers fought for to give us what we wanted. You too fought, for our descendents & for me. Those things were my rights, my freedom, & all my liberties. These things we all cherish & surely we need, but the price was to great, if anyone asks me. Again I say to ANY & ALL OF MY VNV, Thank you, & I'm sorry for now we have PTSD. SHHHH, they say, Don't mention that horrid thing, It's on the inside, TRANSPARENT NOT ARE THOSE VNV!!! That is a thing no one can see, unless you listen & look quite intently, Then you can share & be taught by the VNV, True brotherhood-- united as one, as it should be. HEY EVERYONE, can you NOW hear & see the cries, the pain, or any of the screams? If you weren't there, you SHOULD care. This must be heard, for my nerves now are starting to wear. Listen & share & "hug" your VNV. "WELCOME HOME BROTHERS"you should say if fortunate enough are you to any meet or see. Do you value your freedom, or the Statue of Liberty?! Transparent are you if you still cannot see. They did it ALL for us, both you & me, & our descendents yet to be. Continueing to "HUG" Love Respect Remember & Thank For Any and ALL of MY VNV Baby sis, HUGGER <9/99>

You have all done a wonderful job and I will be forever grateful. I was able to meet my best bud, we were bunk mates for 10months and he was shipped home during the middle of the night and we never got to say good-bye to each other. Thirty years later he found me, through a K-9 Assoc. sticker in the back window of a ladies car. He asked the lady want the sticker was for, she told him her husband was a Viet Nam dog handler and that they had this assoc., she gave Denny his number, who inturn contacted this fella, got the necessary info to join the assoc., got the back issues of the papers, found my name and address and low and behold, Thirty years later I get a letter from Denny. He only lives about 4-5hrs. from the Toledo area and we did manage to get together for a short reunion. Let me tell you there is no other feeling that can compare to when you first see each other afte

Dad was never able to have a father to daughters talk with his children about Vietnam. Dad was over there from 9/65-9/66 with MAC IV Corp Advisory Team 53. He was a 26 year old Staff Sergeant in the army. My sister and I would like any information on MAC IV Corp and what Advisory Teams did. If anyone knew our father it would be nice to hear from you also. His name was Larry J. Jenschke. This is a great tool for us vet kids who are trying to get information about our loved ones whoe served in Vietnam. My mother does not like to talk about dad's military career. My mother just recently gave my sister and I dad's file which is about 9 inches thick it is very hard to follow and understand because of all the military lingo it has in it. God Bless you all and welcome home. God's Blessings, Rhonda Jenschke Bodnar

I flew every chance I got and volunteered to go with Marines, Army and anyone who was going out in the field. I did, saw and was a part of things that most mechanics know nothing about. I was very fortunate and very lucky at times. I was on Hamburger Hill in May 1969 with the Army that time. There 3 days before being sent back to DaNang. I really like your site. It is interesting and it is nice talking to fellow vets. My brother was a Marine in Viet Nam 1966-1967. He was north and south. Thanks A Fellow Vet.

Comments: Myself, being a Vietnam Veteran, find this site very informative and interesting. Keep up the good work and I look forward to visiting again. I run a school education program in Melbourne Victoria, our main topic is the history of Vietnam, the role that we played the aftermath and the futility of war. The age group we reach is 15years to 18 years and some mature age students. I returned to Vietnam in 1995 and found very little had changed and visited America in 1996. I regularly surf the net looking for new information material to use in the education visitations, eg. Poems , stats. etc. Thank-you for an extremely thought provoking site......Phil White.

If he and Clinton had had their way thousands of body bags would be arriving to mothers across America. Will they ever learn that airpower is limited, they destroyed one Sebian tank with 3 months of bombing. The Serbs were dug in and ready for an invasion. Our troops should be protected against idiots. I have learned a great deal from the chairman of TFR who was himself in Vietnam. I have a deep respect and gratitude to all the soldiers who have served this country in the past and those who will be doing so in the future. I say to all the Vietnam Veterans out there "Welcome Home" and to all the soldiers who have bravely served there country "Thank You and may God be with you" Thank you for the oppurtunity to view a page as special as this one.

Comments: Thank you for your web page. During the Vietnam war (1967) I was just starting college and raising a baby. Nights after work I would sit at his highchair serving his first taste of babyfood, while the local channel brought the daily war film into the living room. I still remember the scenes--horrible even in black and white. I know I can't understand how it's possible to endure such hardship and suffering; however, I can tell you that then, as now, I am one of many, many Americans who is sincerely grateful for your bravery and honor. We prayed for you to survive and come home safely. I am sorry there are so many ways our country has failed to show you our pride in you and gratitude for your willingness to accept the call to fight for freedom. I pray that God who knows the true depth of your sacrifice will bless and keep you...and heal you...and forgive our nation for all the times you couldn't feel the support you deserve. And may He help us move "political mountains" to learn the truth regarding our POW/MIA's--that they should be found and return.

Comments: I just recently became interested in the happenings of the Vietnam War. I suppose is is partly due to age. I realized that the stuff taught in the classrooms are nothing compared to what really happened. Why is it that the truth is never taught and the reason that we, as products of our education, are never taught how it must have felt to live such an event. I would like to commend you for what you are doing. You are not only helping those who fought by your side but you are educating the minds of the young who will never understand what it was like. I could not imagine what it must have been like for you family to deal with where you were on a daily basis. I could only begin to understand the fright and anticipation you must have felt with every dawning day. I would like to thank you for sharing your experiences with me. Take care of yourself and Keep faith with God, He was the only one who stood by your side 100% with what you went through... Margie Rexroth
